CD Nacional wins COOP Beach Soccer Championship at Oceanside

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (May 6, 2012) – Clube Desportivo (CD) Nacional of Portugal fought back from being two points down in the third period to defeat the Oceanside, Calif.-based SoCal Beach FC in the men’s title game of the COOP Beach Soccer Championship by a score of 5 – 4. The match culminated three days of pool play for the eight professional squads among more than 300 teams that played on the sand at Oceanside Harbor this weekend.

SoCal had a 4 – 2 lead going into the third and final period, but CD Nacional tied the game with six minutes remaining. The Portugal team scored once again in the last two minutes of the game, securing CD Nacional’s first U.S. win. CD Nacional teammate Andre Jasmins was named most valuable player, and SoCal Beach FC’s Adriano Lima received the Golden Toe award for his scoring accomplishments during the tournament.

Hampton Roads Soccer Club (HRSC) Elite of Virginia Beach, Va., finished third after defeating the San Diego-based Shoreline Beach Soccer Club 5 – 3. HRSC Elite goalie Daryl Fischer’s efforts earned him the Golden Glove award for top goalkeeper at this year’s event.

More than 30,000 people attended the Oceanside beach soccer activities over the weekend, an event that is reported to have a $2 million economic impact on the area. The Long Beach version of the COOP Beach Soccer Championships is scheduled for June 2 – 3.

Beach soccer is said to be the world’s fastest growing sport. Youth teams from all across the country for girls and boys divisions make up most of the entries at Oceanside, but the pro division continues to grow in stature and popularity.

“We couldn’t have asked for a more exciting championship game,” said Darrin Bryan, COOP brand manager. “The players put their hearts and souls into these games, and that’s what this event is all about. COOP is proud to be part of it, and we’re looking forward to the Long Beach championships next month.”
